This hidden gem is located 8km East of Tofield on hwy 14 and then 12 km south on range rd. 182. Black Nugget lake is a redeveloped former coal mine that is fed from an under ground spring, it is called a lake but it is not a very big lake. It is known for fantastic bird watching, there are many different species of birds that are rarely seen. The sites at Black Nugget or Dodd’s coal mine as it used to be called are spacious and well treed.
There are 18 unserviced sites, these sites are quite private, 29 power only sites, 6 full service (power, water and sewer) sites,3power group sites. 30 amp power is also available on some sites.Prices range from $19.00 -$30.00/night+GST during the 2011 season. Some sites do have a view of the water, if you are a bird watcher these are the sites to pick. There is an island in the middle of the lake where a lot of the birds nest, quite a site to see. Other amenities at Black Nugget are picnic shelter, playground, horse shoe pits, fishing- canoe or electric motor boats are allowed on the water, loonie showers and flush toilets at the main building and pit toilets are located through out the park, firewood is available for a fee and a sani- dump is available on site. A small concession is available for ice and small snacks and a few non perishable food items. Swimming is not advised because of the high volume of birds around and in the water. Pets are welcome with the regular rules in place, kept on a leash and pick up after them.
We camped at Black Nugget in 2010 and there is a golf course being built across the road on the north side of the park. Coal Creek Golf Resort and RV park will be open for golf this year for tournament play only, it will be open to the public in 2012 with 18 holes, there is even black sand in the #7 sand trap. They will be holding an open house for the public in August. For the avid golfer Black Nugget will be a gem for your next Glamping trip.
